I met this man while at the Highland Games in Grandfather Mountain, North Carolina. I could see him walking around the grounds striking poses here and there. It caught my eye since I'm an artist and can recognise interesting poses when I see them! It happened that I passed by him more closely later in the day and I had an opportunity to ask him for a photograph. He knew JUST exactly how to pose for me! I was so taken by his "look" that for months I couldn't get it out of my mind and eventually I simply had to paint him. It was a challenge however because I had to improvise on the background. In the photo there was a crowd of tourists behind him. I had to imagine the mountains behind him as I would like to see them..... kind of reflecting the colors in his hair and clothes but very simple, so that they didn't detract from the figure. I'm VERY happy with how this painting turned out. There is nothing that I would change about it. It may be my most favorite painting I've ever done in my lifetime.... so far!
